Aspect of American Culture The culture of a people is basically their way of life. Therefore, there is much logic in the deduction that culture shapes the mind of the society. Ethan Watters’ presents this idea in a rather great manner in his piece ‘Being Weird. Through the text, Watters largely blames the culture of the society for most of the major issues that have to be faced. In essence, what is greatly concurred with in the author’s postulation is that Westernization, as a result of the Western culture has blinded individuals in the society to knowledge that already exists. So often, explains the author, the society finds much comfort in its own way of doing things rather than in the right way of doing things. Whether it is online or through other formal and informal channels, this society ha s the access to fast food almost everywhere. At this juncture, it is critical to note that the pervasive influence that access has on obesity cannot be underestimated. At the end of the day, access feeds consumption. Technology is another integral percept that has greatly defined the American culture and in turn promoted obesity. Technological changes have not only made the marketing and advertising of fast foods easier but they have also made the American society to be obsessed with the time thrift(Boero). As a result, individuals no longer find the inherent need to sit down and enjoy a healthy meal. The most viable option has in most cases remained as ordering of fast foods. The role of technology can also be viewed from the lens that it has promoted a more or less sedentary lifestyle for the American people. There is so much comfort that is associated with sit downs. This is also the main reason as to why physical exercises are not held in high regard. Children would rather stay entertained through video games as opposed to any form of physical exercise-technology. Individuals would rather take the elevator than go through the stairs-technology.
